A gift to future mothers on Mother’s Day

A gift to future mothers on Mother’s Day

On this mother’s day I call on all mothers to tell their birth stories confidentially and respectfully so as to encourage confidence in the next generation of mothers.  We need to acknowledge that the process of labour happens for a reason and that birthing is hard work.  It is essential that our community understands that:

I am Woman

  • I am designed to carry children
  • I have intimate knowledge about my body
  • For me pregnancy and birth is a normal physiological life event – it is not an illness.
  • Birth for me is not just a physical act; it is an emotional, social and psychological act.
  • Birth is uncertain but not dangerous for the majority of us women.

“Birth is not only about making babies.  Birth is about making mothers …. strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.”  Barbara Katz Rothman

When women work together, change happens. Women give life, care for their families, work, contribute to our society and help their families grow and thrive. Do you know that if you invest in a woman, she in turn will invest 90% of what she earns back into her family to improve their livelihood?  We as women need to join in a common purpose, to make a tremendous difference in a community – we all have the power we need – to create change for maternal health.

“Although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends, when billions of people join forces in common purpose, we can make a tremendous difference.” Ban Ki-moon is the eighth Secretary-General
